The Light of Asia - Sir Edwin Arnold

The Light of Asia, subtitled The Great Renunciation, weaves through its poetic verses the life and philosophy of Prince Siddhartha Gautama who attained enlightenment under the bodhi tree and became the Buddha.

This book has received high acclaim since it was published in 1879 and covers all aspects of the Buddha’s life, from his birth, his youth, his enlightenment, through to his death. It is based mainly on Sanskrit sources.
